About Friends Western School

Friends Western School Safety Consulting helps educational institutions across the Pasadena area build compliance programs that protect students, staff, and visitors. We specialize in school safety audits, emergency preparedness planning, and OSHA compliance for K-12 campuses, private schools, and childcare facilities. Our team understands the specific regulatory environment that governs educational settings in California, including Title 8 requirements, fire and life safety codes, and state Department of Education guidelines. We've worked with private and independent schools throughout the San Gabriel Valley that need practical guidance rather than generic corporate safety frameworks. Schools have unique constraints including limited budgets, volunteer oversight structures, and seasonal programming that changes throughout the year. We build safety programs that account for those realities and that staff can actually follow and maintain.

How They Can Help

Friends Western School Safety Consulting provides safety consulting and compliance services designed specifically for educational facilities. Our services cover the full compliance picture for California K-12 campuses, childcare centers, and private schools. Our campus safety audits examine physical facility conditions, fire egress, chemical storage in science labs and maintenance areas, playground equipment safety, and emergency preparedness documentation. We produce written findings with specific corrective guidance prioritized by risk level. Emergency preparedness planning is one of our most requested services. We help schools develop or update Emergency Operations Plans that meet California Department of Education requirements and align with the Standardized Emergency Management System. We also help plan and document lockdown, evacuation, shelter-in-place, and reunification procedures. Our OSHA compliance work for educational facilities covers hazard communication programs, injury and illness prevention programs required by Cal/OSHA, and right-to-know documentation for custodial and maintenance staff who work with chemicals. We also offer staff safety training on topics including emergency response roles, chemical safety, first aid preparedness, and incident reporting. Training sessions are designed to fit into existing professional development schedules. For schools undergoing accreditation reviews, we provide compliance documentation support to ensure safety program records meet evaluator expectations.

What to Expect

Our process starts with a phone or video call where we learn about your school, campus configuration, current safety programs, and any specific concerns. We ask about recent inspection results, whether you have a current Emergency Operations Plan, and what your current injury and illness prevention program looks like. We then schedule an on-site campus walkthrough, typically done with the head of school or facilities director. We review physical conditions across all areas students and staff occupy, including classrooms, labs, kitchens, storage areas, playgrounds, and parking and drop-off zones. We also review your existing documentation. Within two weeks, we deliver a written assessment report covering both physical findings and program gaps, with recommendations organized by priority. We include sample language and templates where they're useful to speed up implementation. We offer a follow-up check-in after three months for most clients to see how implementation is going and answer questions that come up. Schools that want ongoing support can move into an annual retainer that includes a yearly audit cycle and ongoing document updates.

We also accept engagements from schools elsewhere in Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire. Remote program development and documentation services are available to schools anywhere in California.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are private schools subject to Cal/OSHA requirements?
Yes. Private schools in California are employers and are subject to Cal/OSHA requirements just like any other employer. That includes maintaining an Injury and Illness Prevention Program, complying with hazard communication standards, and keeping required records. Schools are sometimes surprised to learn this, but Cal/OSHA does inspect school campuses.
What's required in a California school Emergency Operations Plan?
California's School Emergency Planning Guide and the Standardized Emergency Management System set the framework for school EOPs. Plans need to cover all-hazards response including evacuation, lockdown, shelter-in-place, medical emergencies, and student reunification. They also need to define staff roles and be reviewed and updated annually.
How often should a school conduct a campus safety audit?
At minimum, a formal review should happen annually. Many schools also benefit from a lighter mid-year check as programming changes between semesters. If there's been any significant incident, facility change, or staff turnover in key roles, a review sooner than the annual cycle is a good idea.
Do you work with childcare centers as well as K-12 schools?
Yes. We work with licensed childcare centers, preschools, and after-school programs in addition to K-12 campuses. Childcare facilities have their own licensing requirements under Community Care Licensing, and we're familiar with how those interact with Cal/OSHA requirements and local fire codes.
What does a typical campus safety walkthrough cover?
We review classrooms, hallways, laboratories, kitchens, storage areas, playgrounds, parking and drop-off zones, and any areas staff or students regularly occupy. We're looking at physical conditions, egress paths, chemical storage practices, equipment condition, and signage. We also review documentation during the visit, including your current safety programs and any recent inspection records.
Can you help our school prepare for a WASC or CAIS accreditation visit?
Yes. Safety program documentation is reviewed as part of both WASC and CAIS processes. We help schools organize their compliance records, fill gaps in written programs, and make sure what's on paper reflects what's actually happening on campus. It's worth addressing this well in advance of the visit rather than scrambling in the weeks before.
What chemical safety requirements apply to school science labs?
Science labs that store or use hazardous chemicals are subject to Cal/OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, which requires Safety Data Sheets for all hazardous chemicals, proper labeling, and documented staff training. Improper chemical storage and missing SDS documentation are among the most common findings in school compliance audits.
How do we get started if we're not sure what we need?
The initial call is a good place to start even if you're not sure what level of service you need. We'll ask a few questions about your current programs, any recent inspections or incidents, and your biggest concerns. From there we can recommend whether a full audit, a targeted program review, or something else makes the most sense for your situation.
